Must be nice

I’ve noticed that more and more stores are trying to encourage customer loyalty by offering them some kind of savings program.  A lot of the stores offer free loyalty cards that give the members special “members only” pricing.  Other stores have the nerve to charge an annual fee for their loyalty cards.  You would not believe how many times I’ve gone to a store and waited in the checkout line and heard the cashier ask the customer if the customer has that store’s loyalty card and the customer says that they don’t have one and don’t want one!  Even when the cashier explains that they could save a lot of money on that particular purchase and that the loyalty card is free, the customers say that they are not interested in saving any money!  Well, all I have to say about that is “must be nice!”

I cannot even begin to imagine turning down no-strings attached discounts!  What are these people afraid of?  Some big conspiracy on the part of the big stores or the government to track their spending and turn that against them for evil purposes?  Well, OK, the stores are tracking what customers are buying, but that is only to help the stores predict future trends, not for some insidious evil plan!
