I don’t understand the big racial deal about Obama
I am constantly hearing people (either in person or on television) go on and on about how Barack Obama would be the first black President if he was to be elected president. I know his skin color looks dark, but I don’t understand how they can say he is black. One of his parents was white, the other black, right? So how can you say he is either black OR white? When I was growing up, I was told that the proper term for someone of this type of mixed race was “mulatto.” Going to the dictionary.com website, I type in the word “mulatto” and they define it as the offspring of one black and one white parent. So why aren’t “they” being truthful and calling it “like it is.” Is “mulatto” now considered “politically incorrect?”
I know that Barack’s skin is black, and his father was black, but his mother was white, and since his parents broke up when he was really young so he was raised by the white side of the family. In essence, because of that, he was raised “white.” On another note – there has been a lot of controversy about white people adopting black children because some black advocates are concerned about black children being raised “white” and how that would lead to some kind of identity crisis and ruin their lives. Doesn’t seem to have ruined Barack Obama’s life too much!
