Bill pay

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

I really love to use the Internet to pay my bills online. I love to set up the autopay feature on my credit cards so that the minimum payment is always paid so that I don’t incur any late fees. Of course, I send in more money than the minimum payment, but I set it up that way just to cover my backside just in case.

One thing that annoys me is when I try to set up autopay with a company and they require that you download a form, fill it out and mail it in with a voided check. If I wanted to do all of that, I wouldn’t be trying to sign up for autopay in the first place! So I arrange with my bank’s BillPay service to send those payments in for me. There is more than one way to skin a cat!

The information highway

The other night I got a phone call from a friend.  She had recently discussed having breast augmentation surgery with her husband.  She wanted to know if there was a website that she could visit to get more information on the subject.  I suggested a great health directory that I came across while doing some research of my own.  This site not only has medical information but also was a great fitness directory as well as a general health and wellness directory too.

There is a vast amount of information on everything from aging, to reproductive health, to women’s health and a lot more.  I told her that it should answer the questions she may have forgotten to ask her doctor.  You know how that is, you get into the doctor’s office and you have a slew of questions you thought about before the visit, but you end up forgetting half of them and then remember after you have left. They even have information on the health and well being of your pets!!!!

New Words

Friday, June 24th, 2011

I have noticed over the past few years a plethora of new words in the English language. I remember a day when the word ain’t was not acceptable, it now appears in the dictionary.

The Internet has brought us many new words also. A good example is the word Blog. It means a biographical log and was non-existent just five years ago. We now Google someone’s name or a business; we post on FaceBook and we “tweet” on Twitter. We now have search “engines” and “browsers”; we “clean” our hard drive; we use a flash drive; and we post on a dashboard (I remember when the only thing a dashboard was, was in the front seat of a car).

We have plug ins that we “download” and send files that we “upload”, We have “widgets” and “cookies” ….there are so many new terms out there that I cannot begin to list them all here.

It is indeed a new world, and if you don’t keep up, you will definitely be left behind.

Evening in

I was supposed to meet Jim for dinner at Ruby Tuesday last night but my allergies were acting up so horribly that I just had to beg for a rain check.  Naturally Jim was very disappointed because it was his birthday and I was supposed to foot the bill!  Too bad for Jim!

Instead I stayed home and ate one of my favorite Lean Cuisine Swedish meatball dinners and watched the Criminal Minds marathon on the new ION station that I got when I ordered my new service from www.LocalTV-Satellite.com.

After watching four episodes in a row, I finally put the cat out and activated the home security pryor alarm and turned in for the night.  I’ve been really glad to have the security system installed after my neighbor Georgia’s townhouse was broken into last week!  I think that having the alarm has helped me to sleep better at night.

Yes, I am spoiled

Lucy was telling me that she has been trying to get decent internet service out at her place for over ten years now, and she is really getting frustrated.  She has had to settle for really slow dial up service and it is driving her crazy.  She applied for dsl service through the phone company but they told her that it would be at least another ten years (or more!) before that is available in her neighborhood.

I belong to a Yahoo discussion group and am amazed at how many people complain that they don’t have any options for Internet other than dial-up. They even complain that they satellite Internet options for them don’t work. They complain that the service is unreliable and that the technical support for them just does not exist.

I can remember when we first got Internet access here, it was dial-up. I was thrilled to get Internet access to begin with! But at first I used it primarily for email only. It was great being able to communicate with friends and family across the world without having to try to find a good time to call them on the phone. I love the convenience of email; especially if someone lives on the opposite side of the world!  Yet times have changed, and I’ve been lucky to be able to upgrade to something faster.

I just cannot even imagine having  dial-up internet as the only option anymore!  I guess progress is slower in some parts of the United States than in others!
