I’ve often felt that too many people pursue the big bucks jobs instead of the emotionally rewarding nonprofit jobs that our country desperately needs. I think one of the reasons for that might be that when children are growing up and attending school that there is so much emphasis on the importance of trying to make as much money as possible. And I have to say that the economic instability of the country doesn’t help much!

I think it would be great if more attention was focused on how rewarding a nonprofit career can be to a person. One of the problems with non profit jobs, though, is the general idea that the jobs themselves are low paying. And that may be true. I think that has a lot to do with the obscenely low minimum wage laws in this country. People cannot survive on minimum wage, and that is a crying shame. One thing is for sure though, I’m glad that I’m not the one in charge of fixing all of this country’s problems!

Good grief!

I am gobsmacked by all of the political unrest going on around the world lately! I cannot imagine even for a minute that the governor of Wisconsin truly believes that there is not going to be huge political fallout for what he has done to damage the working class people of his state. I truly never thought I’d see the day when union busting tactics would go to that extreme. Sure, I’d expect that in the private sector, but never in the public sector. To be perfectly honest, I can’t help but wonder what would happen if everyone who was directly effected by that decision just up and quit their jobs! What a mess that would leave!

I keep hearing about how some people in the government want to privatize Social Security. These people say that the taxpayer should be able to invest their own money and not depend on the government to invest it. That sounds to me like there might be a powerful lobby of investment services companies behind it!

I can’t imagine that the average American would be able to take the time to do all of the very important research needed to make privatized Social Security work for them. The whole idea of Social Security was to provide a guaranteed living income when one retires. Noble goal, but we all pretty much know that Social Security is not living up to its promise, and it probably never will. What is the answer? I really don’t know, and I’m glad I’m not the one responsible to come up with the answer!

All I know is that in addition to Social Security, I’m doing my best to invest in an IRA and my company’s 401K. Hopefully the combination of the three will be enough to take care of me in my old age.

I can remember when I was in college, one of my favorite courses was sociology. I found that topic very fascinating, so I learned a lot. One of the things that the professor taught the class, was the “official” definition of what “upper,” “middle” and “lower” classes were. According to the definition we were taught in class, the “upper class” were people who had really “old” money – many generations of wealth, going back as far as the Mayflower or longer. The “middle” class were the “new” money people like the Kennedys and the Bushes and most of our political leaders. These people have had tons of money for several generations.

Those of us who are “self made” wealthy, well, we’re just “upper-lower class” according to that principle. And, to be politically correct, we no longer call the “lower” class by the term “lower.” To be politically correct, we call the “lower” class the “working class.”

So it was with much surprise that I read an article on the Internet today at Investopedia that suggests that what I was taught as “working class” is in fact, in many cases, considered to be “middle class.” Are you as confused as I am?

My father has always been interested in conservation – even before it became “cool” to be “green.” Part of his attempts at conservation have always included rain harvesting. Ever since I can recall we have had rain water barrels at the corners of our house and our garage. We would use the water collected from the rain barrels to water our gardens and wash the cars.

The only thing that worries me about doing this is the reports that I hear about acid rain. That’s the biggest reason we don’t use it for potable water. I don’t know if there even exists a filter system that could be purchased by a homeowner that would make it safe to drink. That is one of the things that makes me very angry about the slowing down of environmental protection acts – the air that is being polluted hundreds of miles away from us is ruining our air and water. I know that there are technologies available to scrub the pollutants from the factories at the source, but they aren’t being installed and maintained as fast or as well as they need to be done.

Well…. I’ll get off my soapbox now! Conserving water is still a good thing.
