Tragedy in Japan

Friday, March 11th, 2011

Many years ago I saw a movie called Earthquake in a movie theater.  The theater had been equipped with a special system that made the seats shake so that the audience felt what it would be like to actually be in an earthquake.  I have been terrified of earthquakes ever since.  This recent disasterous earthquake in Japan is very sad.  The tsunami also terribly sad.  The damage to the nuclear plant is terrifying!  I haven’t been able to listen or watch much of the news about it, but just thinking about what could happen to the entire earth as a result of the nuclear plant going into meltdown is one of the scariest things!

Thankfully I haven’t heard of any media idiots who are callous enough to claim that this is some kind of divine justice.  I hope none of them are doing that!

What a time we live in

Good grief!

I am gobsmacked by all of the political unrest going on around the world lately! I cannot imagine even for a minute that the governor of Wisconsin truly believes that there is not going to be huge political fallout for what he has done to damage the working class people of his state. I truly never thought I’d see the day when union busting tactics would go to that extreme. Sure, I’d expect that in the private sector, but never in the public sector. To be perfectly honest, I can’t help but wonder what would happen if everyone who was directly effected by that decision just up and quit their jobs! What a mess that would leave!

I love a good spoof

When I found this commercial on YouTube today I laughed out loud. I’ve seen a few television news stories about the annual running of the bulls and I always shake my head over how foolish I think the men are for endangering themselves that way. When I saw this commercial about running with the squirrels, I was delighted! Good spoof!

Teens in Crisis

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

There has been a lot of mention in the news lately of Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen and other Hollywood celebrities who are obviously abusing drugs and need serious help. I have to wonder what our teenagers think of these news reports and what they talk about amongst themselves when drug abuse comes up in their conversations?

I think that teens are paying keen attention to these reports and are forming their opinions based on the outcome of these celebrities and their escapades, plus any friends who may have experience with teen cocaine addiction. There are some who come back from rehab with a new chance at life, and there are some who just seem to continuously fail, such as Lindsay. That poor girl is a train wreck.

Getting the right help for teen cocaine treatment is critical. If you put a person, especially a young person, into the wrong type of facility or the wrong program you can end up doing more harm than good. That is why it is important for parents to get informed and know their options. Unfortunately, youth trends suggest that most parents are in denial and only make decisions when faced with a crisis, like an automobile accident that is the result of driving while impaired, or an overdose. It is very hard to be a good parent and teens who are attracted to the drug lifestyle are the most challenging kids to parent.

I’ll have to learn more about these guys

My brother sent me a link to a video of some prisoners in a maximum security prison in the Phillipines that were taught (and performed) a Michael Jackson routine. From what I understand, this was featured on a CNN show, but I don’t know the details. I just thought it was nice that the inmates were able to get a little bit of joy in their lives by performing – dancing is such a good thing!
