New glasses again

Saturday, March 12th, 2011

My favorite style of prescription glasses is the rimless style. I would really love to not have to wear glasses at all, but that simply is not an option. And to be perfectly honest, contact lenses scare me half to death! I can’t even put eye drops in my eyes by myself; I can’t imagine putting contact lenses in my eyes, and then trying to peel them out again! My eyes just water thinking about it!

Much to my dismay, the expense of the glasses that I need to wear have skyrocketed in price.  To the point where I simply did not buy new glasses the last time that I went to the eye doctor and got a new prescription.  In this day and age, who can afford $300 for a pair of new glasses?  I really would love to use the Zenni Optical glasses because they are so reasonably priced, and the styles are great!  And their new website design is terrific!

Sadly they don’t offer the service that I need; putting prism in my glasses.  So I’m just going to have to go on using my old glasses for a few more months until I can scrape up the money to buy glasses with prism in them.

My Cup of Tea

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

My sister has been encouraging me to drink a hot tea every day. Both black teas and green teas have health benefits, mostly an anti-oxidant that helps prevent cancer. She wants me to drink at least one cup, if not two cups, every day.

The green tea has an amino acid in it that produces a boost in your body’s immune system. This has been proven in a recent Harvard sponsored study on interferon contained in the body. In their study, subjects who drank 5 cups of tea every day had 10 times as much interferon in their body than the non-tea drinkers. That is a huge difference and definitely something I should take to heart.

Eating healthier

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

One of the things that I’ve been trying to do lately is to eat a little bit healthier when I get the chance. I’ve been relying too heavily on fast food recently and my body is objecting. I’ve noticed, though, that eating healthy tends to be more expensive.

So that means that I have to look a little bit harder at ways to save money. Looking for the fresh fruit that is marked down because the “use by” date is getting really close is one way that I do that. I’ve never liked buying under-ripe fruit and then having to wait a few days for it to ripen enough to eat it.

So now I look for the fresh fruit mix bowls that are marked down and try to eat them for a snack. I enjoy them because they are sweet, and I have a sweet tooth. The only problem is that I have to eat them about an hour before I plan to eat a “real” meal because eating fruit makes me hungry again really fast! But they are good for a “Gee I’m not really hungry but want to eat something sweet” to satisfy my sweet tooth!

Some causes still not known

Friday, March 4th, 2011

My father was recently diagnosed with hypertension.  Everyone in the family was very surprised because there is not any family history of hypertension that we are aware of.  We’ve been doing some research on high blood pressure causes and learned that there are other factors involved that may cause it.

One of the factors is stress, another is sodium.  Well, Dad has always liked a lot of salt on his food, so we’re going to replace the salt with salt substitute right off.  That’s going to be tough because there is so much sodium in just about everything one buys nowadays!  Especially canned goods!  So we’re buying a big freezer and going to be serving him things from the freezer instead of canned goods.

As for stress, well that’s a tough one.  He’s always meditated and exercised, so we’re not sure what else to do there.  Fortunately we’re all here to support him and are willing to work it through with him.

Teens in Crisis

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

There has been a lot of mention in the news lately of Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen and other Hollywood celebrities who are obviously abusing drugs and need serious help. I have to wonder what our teenagers think of these news reports and what they talk about amongst themselves when drug abuse comes up in their conversations?

I think that teens are paying keen attention to these reports and are forming their opinions based on the outcome of these celebrities and their escapades, plus any friends who may have experience with teen cocaine addiction. There are some who come back from rehab with a new chance at life, and there are some who just seem to continuously fail, such as Lindsay. That poor girl is a train wreck.

Getting the right help for teen cocaine treatment is critical. If you put a person, especially a young person, into the wrong type of facility or the wrong program you can end up doing more harm than good. That is why it is important for parents to get informed and know their options. Unfortunately, youth trends suggest that most parents are in denial and only make decisions when faced with a crisis, like an automobile accident that is the result of driving while impaired, or an overdose. It is very hard to be a good parent and teens who are attracted to the drug lifestyle are the most challenging kids to parent.
