Don’t count your chickens

Friday, January 21st, 2011

Ellie was telling me that she was thinking about becoming an egg donor for a local fertility clinic.  She said that a friend of hers told her that she could get paid $10,000 for donating eggs through their egg donation program.  I was really surprised to hear that, because Ellie has always been squeamish around medical procedures and needles!

I have to wonder exactly why Ellie would consider doing something like that.  Is it because she needs the money, or is she being altruistic and wants to help infertile couples to have children?  I just did a little bit of reading on the subject because I had the impression that donating eggs was a painful process, but I was just learning that it is not painful.  I think I’ll try to find some kind of documentary on YouTube about it; I think the subject is fascinating!

A helping hand

With all of the publicity during the economic recession about how people should go back to school to improve their chances of better future jobs I’ve been looking into various grants and scholarship opportunities that would help pay for some courses that I might be interested in taking.  My cousin Judy was lucky and got enough grants and scholarships to pay for her entire bachelor’s degree!

She told me to check out the Internet search engines for scholarships and grants – it is a wonderful resource to help with these kinds of things.  She told me that I could find scholarships for left handed people, pre med scholarships, engineering scholarships, even music scholarships quickly and easily.  So I went online and found a plethora of information about financing a college education.  I have to admit that I was really surprised at how many african american scholarships that are available nowadays!  I think that it is great that there are so many grants and scholarships available to help people with these expenses.  Without them, many people would not be able to afford going to college at all.

The World of High Finance

Sunday, January 2nd, 2011

Since I started my Facebook account I have been hooking up with so many people from my past that it is mind boggling, I never would have thought how much I enjoy signing on a few times a week and seeing what is going on in the world of so many people that I know and love.

An old friend from high school has posted that he is getting into the world of Online Trading in the next couple of weeks, after the holidays are well over and done with. It will require all of his attention and he will spending a good amount of time with his Online Broker.

I myself know nothing about IRA Accounts, Mobile Trading or Stock Trading but I know a lot of people that are into that scene. I know that there is money to be made and I can only hope that my old friend does well and doesn’t get burnt in the process. I look forward to signing on one day and finding out that he is doing well in his latest endeavour.

Dryer balls actually work

Monday, December 20th, 2010

About three weeks ago I was reading an article about products that actually really do work the way they are supposed to, and save money and energy, which means that eventually the products end up paying for themselves.  In the article the writer was writing that dryer balls do cut down on drying time and eliminate the need for fabric softener.  So I felt adventurous and went ahead and bought a couple to try.  I was pleasantly surprised – they really DO cut the drying time down and the clothes come out static-free and soft and fluffy!  This IS a good investment!  I had read that buying four to six of them cut the drying time even more, so I plan to pick up more the next time I see them in the store.

Mirror Mirror on the Wall

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

I remember a childhood movie where the wicked stepmother asks, “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?” I think of that sometimes when I look in the mirror in the mornings, not because I think I am the fairest. I am always looking for changes and especially any signs of weight gain. After all, with the new Obesity Statistics saying that 7 out of 10 women in America are overweight, that does not leave many of us to be the correct weight for our body type and our age.

When my mother started gaining weight, she took action immediately. She has always been healthy and fashion conscious. She when she noticed her clothes getting tight, so realized that she needed to do something about it. She looked into attending a weight loss retreat and made an appointment with her doctor before starting a diet and exercise program. In fact, all the reputable weight loss resorts require a complete physical and clearance from a personal physician before they will work with you.

I am very fortunate to have inherited my mother’s good genes and to have her for a role model on taking care of myself. I believe that children learn a lot about life from watching what their parents do, which sometimes contradict what their parents say to do.
