Living the Pure Life in Costa Rica

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

I appreciate the guest post, Ignacio Phillips

My most memorable trip abroad was when I went to Costa Rica to study Spanish at a language school on the beach. I originally thought of the idea while watching satellite TV(for more information on satellite tv go here) one night. I had been contemplating on taking language courses abroad, but didn’t know which destination to choose. Then one night I saw it on TV and immediately knew this exotic location was where I wanted to go. I chose to go to school along Tamarindo beach which is perhaps the most popular beach in Costa Rica for young students like myself.

As soon as my charter plane landed in Tamarindo, I fell in love with the country. My host family was so loving and made me feel like home immediately. To this day, I continue to crave the famous gallo pinto dish my host mother made me for breakfast. I became friends with many other students at school, as well as the locals. The saying in Costa Rica is Pura Vida, which means pure life. I really did live the pure life when there and will always miss it there.

One of my favorite activities was going to the beach with my best friend after class. We would lie on the sand or play in the ocean waters. There were various diners located along the beach that served local favorites and fresh seafood.

Tuesday Morning

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

This is Tuesday morning. I just realized that there is a chain of stores called Tuesday Morning. I’m not sure what the meaning is behind the name of that store. Perhaps Tuesdays are significant in the retail industry.

The chain of stores is a clearance outlet of sorts. They have household goods, clothing, toys, luggage, and high end gift ware all marked down to rock bottom prices.I have bought a nice blanket, a duffel bag, and crystal candlesticks at the store near me and each one was an excellent deal.

The only problem is that if you see something that you want, there is no tomorrow. You have to buy it when you see it, because when you come back a few days later it will likely be gone.

Beverly Hills 90210 – My Favorite Teen Drama on TV

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

Thanks for the article from Isaiah Gaines

While some people insist there are more than one Beverly Hills 90210, I find this to be insulting. There is only one Beverly Hills 90210, and it airs on the SOAP network, available via directv channel lineup. It’s my favorite teen drama, and it isn’t some lame rehash. It’s the 90210 that is old school and pure eighties, the one that defined a generation.

What makes 90210 is its cast of characters. You have Steve Sanders, the middle aged jock who’s still trying to finagle enough credits to pass high school before he hits his forties. You have Dylan, the James Dean knockoff who is so much of a rebel he often adopts a cause, just to thumb his nose in the face of other rebels who don’t have one. There is callow naive Donna, harlot Kelly, and sassy Brenda, three terrifying vixens who turn Beverly Hills into their own private drama theater. There is nice guy Brandon and nice boy David, each of whom prove the old axiom.

However, the best characters in 90210 are the Walshes, the two stoic adults who bring order to this menagerie of out of control and hormonal teens. With a combination of iron fisted love and tender but stern advice, they mold the community of hellions into studious kids, and even manage to get Sanders to graduate after decades in high school. This is why I got rid of cable, so I could watch this brilliant and ineffably amazing show.

Beautiful twilight

Friday, September 24th, 2010

I don’t often get up early enough in the morning to see the sunrise, but for some strange reason I woke up early this morning. I pondered rolling over and going back to sleep, but I decided to get up instead. I’m glad that I did because as I was fixing my morning cup of tea I looked outside and saw that beautiful rose-gold tone of twilight that I love so much. It is a fleeting moment, that tone. And I love it.  Not enough to get up early EVERY morning, mind you!  It wouldn’t be quite so special if I saw it every day!

Another Brilliant Idea!

I’m sitting at home one night enjoying a quiet evening with my TV, watching a travel channel provided by my Direct TV company and there is a special on about Cancun! It’s snowy outside and bitter cold, what a great idea, a trip to sunny, tropical Cancun would be a fantastic time! I called my two best friends, did some research on hotels and a few hours later, the trip was booked!

Two weeks to the day I saw the program I was boarding a flight to get out of the frozen tundra my state turns into during February. Just as I suspected, it was beautiful, sunny and palm tress were swaying in the tropical breezes every where you looked was paradise!

Until we got to our hotel. Apparently those same tropical breezes I mentioned above were the cause to the darkness that was our hotel lobby. Wind had knocked out the power, thankfully we were able to check in but because there was no power the restaurants were closed, now this usually wouldn’t be a big deal but we had paid for all-inclusive. Off we went to buy lunch at a restaurant down the street. Upon returning to the hotel, we found the power had come back on and our vacation was quickly looking up.

Despite the rocky first day our hotel was stunning with spectacular views of the Caribbean and the remaining trip went off without a hitch!
