The kids have it great

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

I think that every generation thinks thinks that they have it rougher than any other generation.  I think that there is a trade off.  Before all of the great technological advances people did not have many of the cool gadgets like DVD players for cars and a GPS device to help keep them from getting lost, but they also led a simpler life with less stress.  Or perhaps I should say a different kind of stress.  One of the drawbacks to the technological advances, such as all of the audio and video devices is the fact that we learn very quickly a lot of bad news.  And bad news is very stressful.

On the other hand, the advancing technology creates the opportunities to have a lot more fun.  Many people don’t have to labor physically as hard as they used to because of the introduction of some great labor saving devices, such as vacuum cleaners and automatic washing machines and dishwashers.  I’ll be very interested to see what other kinds of labor saving devices will be invented in my lifetime!

Oh my gosh!

A few months ago my brother bought a wireless light switch for me to use on my bedside table lamp. I didn’t really feel I needed one, but it was a gift from someone who loved me, so I gratefully and dutifully plugged it in. Today I was reading the Consumer Reports Shopsmart magazine for January 2010 and saw it featured in their recall article as being a fire hazard! So I have just unplugged the switch and plan to call the toll free number and hope that they will issue a refund of some sort! I never would have know about this recall if I hadn’t read that magazine! I think maybe I should subscribe to it!

Watching television

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Sometimes I wonder why in the world people would want hundreds upon hundreds on television channels on their television!  When I was growing up, we only had a rotating antenna on our rooftop and got about six television stations!  We would spend most of our day working or playing, and only watch the television in the evenings or on Saturday morning (cartoons for the kids!)

Life sure has changed since the introduction of cable and satellite television!  Most of my friends and neighbors now have Direct Satellite TV for their television.  They tell me how much they enjoy being able to watch so many different sports channels on their Direct TV, and so many good movies, too!  I can see why having Satellite Directv would be especially good for shut-ins who can’t move around very much – at least having the wide variety of choices could help prevent them from going stir-crazy!  I just hope that healthy people balance their lives and get plenty of exercise, too!  Maybe put a television in front of their treadmill so they’re walking while watching!
