Houdini
Tuesday, April 21st, 2009I enjoy watching the squirrels in our yard. There is a red squirrel that I like to call Squirrel Nutkins because he has lost his tale, and that reminds me of a Beatrice Potter tale called Squirrel Nutkins. The tale is about a squirrel that lost his tale! Every day I watch the squirrels gather around the bottom of the bird feeder and gather up the sunflower seeds that I’ve scattered there. I always make sure to scatter lots of seed on the ground so that they will not try too hard to get at the feeder. I’ve lost a lot of good bird feeders to the squirrels! I don’t mind them eating the seeds, but I don’t appreciate it when they ruin the feeders! Maybe I’ll try some of the new squirrel repellants I’ve been hearing about to keep the squirrels away from the feeders completely!
I remember a couple of years ago when a squirrel got into the garage. Since the garage is attached to the house, we were concerned about the damage he could do the the electrical wiring and we didn’t want to chance a fire. So we borrowed a Havahart trap from the game warden service, hoping that we could catch and release him. Well that rascal kept springing the trap but got away! After a few days of him grabbing the bait and escaping we started to call him “Houdini.” Well, unfortunately we ended up having to use a rat trap to catch him because he kept escaping the humane one we were using.
