Snack packs

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

I can’t remember what day it was, but recently I was watching a morning news program for a few minutes and they were talking about healthy food.  The expert of the day was telling the audience that the 100 calorie snack packs were not good for you..  I don’t remember what the reason was because I immediately started remembering how a couple of months ago on the same show there was a different food expert who was raving about the 100 calorie snack packs.  I don’t know if they are good or bad, I’m no expert, but I don’t make a habit of buying a lot and eating a lot of them.

Having said that, I DO keep some in the house for the rare occasion that I have the craving for a small snack.  I know the unit price is more expensive, but in the long run it is better than buying a large bag of something and then only eating a little bit and throwing the rest away because it goes stale.  And it’s better for you than opening a large bag and eating the whole thing because you don’t want to waste food by letting it go stale!  So, I think that the 100 calorie snack packs are a good thing if used in moderation.  I just enjoyed a 100 calorie Hostess carrot cake snack pack.  It was yummy and I don’t feel guilty at all!

Giving the house a facelift

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Well, we’ve finally decided that this is the year to give the house a face lift.  We already have some really good vinyl siding that will look great again once we power wash it this spring.  I’m talking about getting new shutters for the house.  This house doesn’t have any shutters at all; and I think that it simply looks too stark without them.  I don’t know if there were shutters on the house before the vinyl siding was installed or not, but I think that a house without shutters just looks unfinished and “cold.”  So, I am starting to look around at other houses in the area to get some ideas of what looks good on different houses.  I’m planning to buy our shutters from the larsonshutter.com website; they have a great selection of styles and colors and hardware too!

Frustrated with shopping experiences

I don’t understand why it is that as soon as I discover a product that I absolutely LOVE, the stores stop carrying it!  I really did not think that my tastes were all that “weird” and yet it seems that the stores can’t make the profit they need by carrying the products that I LOVE!  Or maybe it’s the manufacturer.  I don’t know, but it is very discouraging to look for a long time for something that’s “just right” and then shortly after I find it, it disappears from the shelves.  Case in point – Hershey’s decaffeinated hot chocolate mix called “Goodnight Kisses.”  I LOVE it, but can’t find it anywhere anymore.  I’ve even gone online to the Hershey’s website to see if they even make it any more, and it seems that they do, so I don’t understand why I can’t find it in the stores!  I did discover that I can buy it over the Internet, but I don’t want to pay the shipping fees!  Oh poor me!

How can we grow businesses in this economy?

Friday, February 13th, 2009

With the economy in shambles, and big businesses laying off, or closing down completely, there is going to have to be growth in the small business market.  Those of us who find ourselves jobless and unable to find jobs are simply going to have to be resourceful and start our own businesses if we are going to survive!  After all, the welfare system can help, but it can’t pay enough to really support us the way we really need support!

Taking classes in starting and running your own small business would be a good idea for people who think that becoming self employment is the answer.  One of the things that almost every new small business needs is a business loan to help them get started.  One online location to obtain fast Business Loans can be is the onlinecheck.com website.

January thaw in February

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

The weather so was beautiful today; it certainly felt like spring!  There were high winds, though, that made it very interesting!  We lost electricity for several hours, and phone service too!  I was suprised that we lost phone service – that is the first time that has happened in many years!  We always have a corded phone in the house because we are used to losing electricity (which makes the cordless phones useless!) and the corded phone still works.  This time, I was talking on the phone and it went dead about three minutes before the electricity went out!

I used my cell phone to call the phone company to report the trouble and they claimed that the trouble was inside the house; they said that they ran a test right there and showed that there were no troubles “outside.”  They said that they would come out to the house the next day to fix it.  When the lights went out, I called the electric company from my cell phone, too.  Well, a few hours later the lights came back on, and about thirty minutes after that the phones started working too, so I know that the trouble was NOT inside the house!  Right after the phones came back on I saw a telephone company truck drive past the house, so I’m sure that they had fixed the problem from the outside.
