Looking ahead to winter sports

Monday, July 21st, 2008

I have a friend who loves to go snowboarding frequently during the winter. Last winter I went snowboarding with him a few times and had a really good time. Last winter I borrowed one of his boards because I wasn’t sure if I was going to like snowboarding well enough to buy a board of my own.  Well, he came over this last weekend and was talking to me about buying one of the Burton snowboards that is on sale right now at the christysports.com website.  We were checking them out together over the Internet and saw that they have a lot of them reduced drastically, so I am going to have to make up my mind pretty quickly which one I want if I am going to buy one!  I’m leaning towards the Burton Feather Snowboard, it is on sale for under $200, and it sounds like a good board for a beginner!

Reclaiming resources

Monday, July 21st, 2008

One of the things that I really enjoy hearing about, or reading about, is when people use reclaimed building materials to either build their new homes or to renovate their older homes.  For example, every now and then I hear about old barns being torn down and the wood being used to build and decorate new homes.  Barn board is very in-demand and expensive!  Who would have thought that the wood used to house livestock would be valued later by people in their own homes!

There is a company that is dedicated to helping consumers to get reclaimed wood flooring in their homes.  There website is snheartpine.com.  They sell beautiful reclaimed heart pine, wormy chestnut, reclaimed barnwood, and a large variety of native American hardwoods.  These folks are true craftsmen, and their work is beautiful.

Shopping at Wal-Mart

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Our family shops at Wal-Mart.  When the news about Wal-Mart considering building a store in our town first hit the papers years ago there were a lot of unhappy people.  Folks were saying that it was going to kill the small businessman.  Then there were articles in the newspaper talking about how to survive the invasion of such a large discount supermarket, advising the “little stores” to focus on servicing products.  Well, let me tell you that before this Wal-Mart came into town, there was only one shoe store in town, and I could never find any shoes there that fit my feet.  I had to drive over two hours to find shoes that fit!  Now, with the Wal-Mart in town, I can buy shoes that fit!  And at less than half the price of the shoes I’d been forced to wear for so many years!  So I’m glad that Wal-Mart came into town!  I DO wish that they had not closed the fabric department recently, however, that made me sad!  I like to sew and now there is no fabric store in town to buy fabric and I have to drive long distances to get fabric!

I want to buy a walk in tub

Monday, July 21st, 2008

I know it will be a while before I get so old that I will need a walk in tub, but I think that whenever anyone builds or renovates that they should be planning ahead for all of the limitations the geriatric years will bring.  The remainactive.com website sells a large selection of different types of walk in tubs to choose from.  My favorite one is the “Encore” tub, but I saw a different tub that has a door that swings outward that is supposed to better for senior citizens and disabilities, so I am going to have to give some thought to that before I order.

Walk in tubs

Monday, July 21st, 2008

I think that walk in tubs are the coolest thing since sliced bread. Especially the ones with jets and heaters in them so that you can walk into the tub, fill it up and have a nice warm massaging soak to relax your muscles after a long hard day. What I like the most about a walk in tub is the fact that you don’t take the chance of losing your balance and falling down while having to lift your foot/leg up high over the side of a standard tub. As people get older, doing things like that are more difficult and dangerous.
