I can’t believe May is over already

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Looking at the calendar, I can’t believe May has flown by so quickly!  This is the last day of May, June starts tomorrow!  The older I get, the quicker time seems to fly by.  It just doesn’t seem fair, youth is definitely wasted on the young!  I want time to slow down a little bit, so I can catch my breath!  Maybe it’s time for a vacation so I can unwind a little bit and catch that breath.

Algae turned into fuel

Friday, May 30th, 2008

According to an article dated May 29, 2008 in the LA Times, there is a company that is planning to use algae to start producing a crude oil that can be used to make gasoline and diesel fuel.  The production of the fuel uses carbon dioxide, which would help to clean up our greenhouse gases problem.  It can be refined in existing refineries and be used by the existing cars and trucks on the road.  It plans to reach full commercial scale in five years.  The company that is planning to do this is called Sapphire Energy.

Wouldn’t that be wonderful, getting oil from algae instead of fossil fuels!

Memorial Day Weekend

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

Today I went to a Memorial Day barbeque party that my office was throwing.  It was a huge party, with a live band.  Everyone was supposed to bring their entire family.

We did have a minute of silence in remembrance and honor of all of those who have served in the military, and I thought that was a good idea.

After the minute of silence there were games and competitions and prizes and lots of food to eat, lots of different beverages to enjoy.  The band was terrific, lots of people danced.  I danced until I thought I was going to drop from exhaustion!  I had a great time!

Politics

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

I’ve been watching the Democratic Primaries with much interest.  I know it looks as if Obama will be getting the nomination, and I have to agree that he would make a good President.  However, I really do wish that Hillary Clinton would win the nomination.  I think that she is well qualified and would do a terrific job, and I think that she deserves to win.  I’d really like to see her as the Presidential candidate with Barack Obama as the Vice President.  I think THAT would be ideal!

Ted Kennedy has taken ill

Monday, May 19th, 2008

I heard on the news that Ted Kennedy took ill over the weekend.  Apparently at first they thought he had a stroke, and they rushed him to the hospital.  After running lots of tests they discovered that he has a very aggressive form of cancer in his brain.  My goodness, that Kennedy family certainly has had its share of bad luck!  For a wealthy family, I can’t say I envy them very much, so much grief and pain.  Ted Kennedy is a great statesman, and I hope that his treatments prove successful beyond expectations.

China’s earthquake

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

I’ve been hearing terrible reports about the devastation that China has suffered from that really bad earthquake.  I understand that it was a 7.8 on the Richter scale!  Yikes!  And then there have been several bad aftershocks too.  I’ve heard that thousands upon thousands are suspected dead; it will likely be weeks before a final count is done on the victims.  Boy, it sure seems that mother earth has it in for that side of the world!  I’m glad I don’t live on that side!

Last Sunday was Mother’s Day

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Last Sunday was Mother’s Day, so I went over to my mother’s house to pick her up and take her out to breakfast at her favorite restaurant, Friendly’s.  I gave her a bouquet of flowers in a beautiful vase, and after breakfast I took her home and visited with her for a while before heading home.  I think she was pleased.

Myanmar and Nargis

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

All the talk around the office today has been about the cyclone Nargis hitting the country of Myanmar, how at least 22000 people are believed dead from this horrible act of nature!  We’ve been talking about how the Myanmar government is refusing to let international relief efforts enter the country.  They say that the dictator is afraid that what the US REALLY wants is to overthrow his government and steal his oil, so he won’t allow the US ships with supplies dock.  That’s really so very sad, I feel badly for the poor commoners who are dying because of this delusion the leader is having!

May Day

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Today is May Day.  My family has always observed May Day simply with spending time with our gardens.  We try to cut pretty bouquets of flowers to bring in the house, and make a pretty flower basket arrangement to give to a friend or neighbor.  This year I decided to take the pretty flower basket arrangement to a nearby nursing home.  I think that they really appreciated it.
