K-Mart Out of Bread
September 1st, 2010Stopped by the little K-Mart near my house to check out their prices on plastic bins. I want to buy 6-8 plastic tubs with lids to store some clothing and household items in the basement. I don’t like to use cardboard boxes because of the risk of mildex or even absorbing any water if there was to be any kind of leak or minor flooding in the basement.
While walking down the aisle with the tubs, there were two young men walking toward me, looking puzzled or out of place. As they approached within speaking distance, one of them spoke to me, in a very heavy accent. I think it was Russian or maybe Czech. He asked, “Where is there bread in this store?”
I pointed to the end of the aisle and told them the bread is usually on the shelves on the end. He said, “No – there is no bread there.” So I guess they were sold out.
Then he asked where else could they buy bread nearby? I told him that the gas station and convenience store across the street should have bread. He was astonished. “They sell BREAD at GAS STATIONS here?”
Front Loader or Top Loader?
August 31st, 2010My mother has always had a top loading washing machine. But I noticed that a lot of the laundromat machines are front loading machines. So I wanted to learn more about why people would use one machine rather than the other type.
Front load washers have been the dominant style of new machines sold to high end consumers for several years. All of the major brands offer both styles.
The front loaders save about $150 per year in energy and water costs as compared to top loaders. They use about 70 percent less water and energy.
Interestingly, a front load washer dissolves the laundry detergent in 5 gallons of water for each load as compared to 20 gallons of water per load used by the top loading machines.
Clean Up Your Mess
August 31st, 2010My mother used to fuss at me all the time about my room being a mess. She would shout up the stairs, “Asha! Clean up your mess!” My teachers would fuss about my desk and demand, “Asha! Clean up your mess!” So, I know what it is like to have things get into a mess and need to be cleaned up, and i was fortunate to have these people help me with that. I learned at a young age that a person of good character will clean up their mess.
So now some people, for whatever reason, are facing financial problems and the way to clean up that mess is to get help from The Credit People.
People who are out of work or who got hurt and have been unable to work are the ones that have my sympathy and deserve help to get back on their feet. They might benefit from working with a credit repair service to make a plan and work their way out of the mess.
The internet can help Repair Your Bad Credit, so don’t give up! Get the right help and you can clean up your mess!
Red Roses
August 31st, 2010In high school, I was a member of the 4-H club for 3 years. We learned about gardening and care of livestock. One thing that I remember learning was the time we planted roses. We learned about preparing the rose bed and how to take care of the rose bushes.
Now I have put that training to good use. My roses are still blooming and they are beautiful.
Extending the Season
August 31st, 2010With tomorrow the first day of September, our summer is about over. Actually, Labor Day weekend is the unofficial end of summer for this area.
I decided to buy some Planters and try to extend the vegetable growing season. By putting the vegetables into containers, I can move them inside the garage at night to protect the plants from frost, then move them back outside in the morning to take advantage of the sun.
Last year I tried this using one Planter and it worked very well. I had two different crop cycles of tomatoes. By planting some of the tomatoes in the containers, I was enjoying fresh, vine ripened tomatoes well into October.
I have also had great success with my Window Box Planters and am learning about raising geraniums. I especially love the bright orange red geraniums and this is my second year planting and nurturing these flowers.
OMG! PacMan Got Her!
August 30th, 2010This is the photo that was used to illustrate an article about companies who allow employees to take a nap during their day. I really wish that I could take a 30 minute nap every afternoon. I know that I would be more productive if I could rest for a bit.
But my first thought when I saw this photo was that some giant PacMan characters were on the rampage, devouring people!
Dress for Success
August 30th, 2010For a short period of time, while still in high school, I was infatuated with the idea of fashion. I thought that women’s fashion was going to be my chosen career path. I read everything that I could find about models, high fashion designers and the New York City fashion district.
But then I went to New York City for our senior class trip and it was quite an eye opener. Nothing I had read prepared me for the reality of the city, and I soon realized that living in NYC was not something that I wanted to do.
Now that I work in a professional office and have to wear nice clothes, I can appreciate a well designed women’s suit and nice shoes.I believe in buying the highest quality clothing that I can afford. It has to be made well and it has to fit well.
I also like well made casual clothes. My favorite outfit for the weekend will always be a nice pair of jeans and a sweater, but I will sometimes wear khaki pants and an oxford. In my opinion, sweat pants and tee shirts are fine around the house for doing chores or working out, but a woman of style and good taste will not wear those things out of the house and be seen in public.
Expensive Wash
August 29th, 2010One of my Facebook friends just posted that he is a having a very bad day. He says that his iPhone got washed with a load of dirty clothes and it no longer works.
The average load of laundry in a typical American home is worth between $400 – $600. But he was checking the replacement cost for his iPhone and has found that a new one will cost $900 – $1,000. Wow! That was a VERY expensive load of laundry!
Sun, Sand and Golf for the Soul
August 29th, 2010Talking with my sister last night, she confided that she was depressed about summer coming to an end. When we were kids, we used to go to the beach quite a bit. If we weren’t at the beach , then we were at the river or at the community pool. Now that we are grownups, we are lucky to get to Myrtle Beach once during the summer. That is just not enough water to refresh my soul. The water re-energizes me, clears my head and makes me feel refreshed. I need http://www.horizonmyrtlebeach.com more than once a year.
I’m trying to talk her into booking a Myrtle Beach hotel with me and getting away at the end of September for a long weekend. I would love to spend four days in the sun and sand and on the golf greens with my sister. That would be heaven.
Finally, after almost an hour of persuading and whining, she agreed to look at some of the Myrtle Beach best hotels and consider going away for 4 days. I hope she follows through on her promise and calls me back tonight to finish making plans.
Try Tilapia
August 29th, 2010My cousin just sent me this recipe for cooking Tilapia. I have never even tried this fish, but I see it on menus and in the seafood departments all the time. So I’m going to take her promise that this is delicious and buy some Tilapia fillets next time I’m at the grocery.
Tilapia That Melts in Your Mouth
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
- Mix together 1/2 cup each of Duke’s mayo and Kraft grated parmesan cheese.

- Spread the mayo and parmesan cheese mixture evenly over the fillets
- Bake at 450 degrees for 20 minutes.
Ads Following Me
August 29th, 2010Shopping online has gotten so easy that I don’t even consider going to a regular store unless I just want to shop. When I am ready to buy, I usually go online. Not always – but I’m just now realizing how much my shopping habits have changed.
Some forward-thinking companies have realized that this is happening and may well be the preferred shopping method of the future. So they are using retargeting to drive online traffic back to their web sites. I find this concept fascinating and have even witnessed it first hand.
The way retargeting companies work is they create ways for their online clients to follow their customers around the internet. They especially use banner ads selectively placed in sidebars and headers.
When I looked at a book on a popular web site and then moved away from that site as I surfed other places, the remarketing kicked in and showed me a banner ad for that very same book on the next site that I visited. So if I had the inclination to take a second look, then it was easy for me to just click on that banner ad and go back to the original site to buy that book.
Have you noticed this happening? I noticed it just today!
Can’t Sleep
August 29th, 2010Last night I had a terrible time falling asleep. I’m not sure why my mind was racing. I don’t have any pressing issues to face this week. But I could not stop thinking and planning things, and could not relax.
I tried a cup of warmed milk, in hope that it would relax me. But that didn’t help. So I put the TV on CNN and let Larry King talk me to sleep. Thankfully, Larry did not cause me any bad dreams. LOL
Light It Up
August 29th, 2010When i visited my eye doctor last week, he had mentioned something that has just now started to sink in and make sense to me. I had complained about having trouble reading small print but he insists that I do not yet need reading glasses. What he explained is that my eyes need more light to read the smaller print. He suggested that when I notice my eyes straining to read something small, like the expiration date on a coupon, to put more light on the item using lamps or even a flashlight, if necessary.
So this morning I was going through the grocery coupons and pulling out any that have expired. I was having a hard time reading some of the dates, so I moved closer to the desk lamp and held the coupon under that the light. Yes! It does make it easier!
So I was worried about needing glasses to read when all I need to do is buy some new halogen lamps for the desk and sofa tables, where I like to sit and read.
Are we middle class?
August 28th, 2010I can remember when I was in college, one of my favorite courses was sociology. I found that topic very fascinating, so I learned a lot. One of the things that the professor taught the class, was the “official” definition of what “upper,” “middle” and “lower” classes were. According to the definition we were taught in class, the “upper class” were people who had really “old” money – many generations of wealth, going back as far as the Mayflower or longer. The “middle” class were the “new” money people like the Kennedys and the Bushes and most of our political leaders. These people have had tons of money for several generations.
Those of us who are “self made” wealthy, well, we’re just “upper-lower class” according to that principle. And, to be politically correct, we no longer call the “lower” class by the term “lower.” To be politically correct, we call the “lower” class the “working class.”
So it was with much surprise that I read an article on the Internet today at Investopedia that suggests that what I was taught as “working class” is in fact, in many cases, considered to be “middle class.” Are you as confused as I am?
Using Tile in the Kitchen
August 28th, 2010Kitchen counter tops and back splashes are a focal point in every kitchen and the subject of one of the items in a recent online news article that listed materials and appliances easy to replace or upgrade that increase the value of your home.
Materials for counter tops can vary regionally, but I am a fan of tiles because of all the pretty colors and patterns. There are different finishes, different shades, and a variety of patterns that ban be used as borders or accent pieces.
I think the use of tile in other areas of the house is even more popular. I have seem some beautiful bathroom tiles used on the floor, the vanity counter top and around the bath. In my own bathroom, there are even tiles on the ceiling within the shower enclosure.
The current popular style is to use subway tiles for a nice retro feel or an urban style. Anyone who has ridden on the subway in New York City can easily recognize this style and many home improvement magazines are showing pictures of the tile work in new designer homes.
Online Friends
August 27th, 2010End of Summer Resort
August 27th, 2010Everyone I know has been to the beach for their week of vacation by now. Once Memorial Day comes, it’s like the gate has opened at the racetrack – everyone bolts for the beach. This year, I’ve been to the beach twice, but I’m not satisfied with just two trips. I want to go to a Myrtle Beach hotel at least one more time.
A quick look at http://avistaresort.com and I know I will find the perfect resort for a 4 day weekend. Four days is a good visit to the beach. You can enjoy the sun and sand and also play golf at least once on a quick getaway.
The Labor Day holiday weekend is just a few days away. If the hurricane heading west across the Atlantic does not spoil everyone’s long weekend, it’s not too late to book resorts in Myrtle Beach and set up a tee time on one of their world famous gold courses. There is still time for summer fun, even at the end of summer.
What’s Wrong with This Picture?
August 27th, 2010This ad got my attention. Not because I am interested in mineral makeup. It got my attention because the model has a piece of burlap tied around her neck.
Why does the model need any kind of fabric tied around her neck at all? She is not a dog or toddler entering a pageant with bows and ribbons a required part of the costume.
But even more importantly, who decided that a piece of burlap was an appropriate fabric for tying around your neck? Have you ever handled burlap? It is rough and scratchy and not something that you want next to your skin – certainly not on the sensitive skin of your neck or face.
I hope no one sees this stupid ad and decided to mimic the photo. Please don’t out and buy burlap to use as a fashion accessory. It’s just not a good idea.
Lock It Up
August 27th, 2010Are lockers just something you use as a kid in school? Well, no. School Lockers are the first thing that come to my mind when you mention lockers to me, but they are used in a variety of business and recreational settings.
As an adult I have used lockers in a variety of different settings. Anyone who changes into a uniform or a costume for their job most likely has a locker to store their street clothes. This includes policemen, nurses, firemen, actors and amusement park workers.
I’ve used lockers at a country club, at the outpatient surgery center, the spa, the water park, the gym and the airport. Although, to be fair, I believe most airports have removed public lockers due to safety concerns. But back in the 1980′s, before terrorism was such an issue, I had to leave some items in a locker at the airport because my flight was delayed and I couldn’t handle dragging all my packages and luggage around the airport for 6 extra hours. I don’t know what people do with all that stuff they need to take on a plane now that they can’t safely store it in lockers for a few hours.
